Freelance journalist Steven Sotloff killed

Wednesday, 03 September 2014 Written by Rory Peck Trust

We are deeply saddened at the news of Steven's death, after more than 12 months in captivity.

Miami-born Steven Sotloff was a talented journalist, deeply committed to covering events in the Middle East. He had been living and working in the region for several years before his abduction in August 2013, reporting from Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Syria, and Turkey. He contributed to a range of current affairs outlets.

The Atlantic, which carried many of Steven's reports said "his reporting vividly captures the Middle East's convulsions in recent years — the ecstasy of revolution, the tortuous paths of political transitions, the anguish of civil war."

Reports of Steven's killing on Tuesday 2nd September come less than a week after his mother, Shirley Sotloff, appealed to Islamic State (ISis) for her son's release. "Steven is a journalist who travelled to the Middle East to cover the suffering of Muslims at the hands of tyrants. Steven is a loyal and generous son, brother and grandson.  He is an honourable man and has always tried to help the weak," she said. "I want what every mother wants: to live to see her children's children. I plead with you to grant me this."

Our thoughts are with Steven's family, friends and colleagues.
